Design for Autistic Individuals  The aim of the project is to explore the particular sensory system of autistics and to design interaction design solutions for their everyday life problems.
Visualizing Daily Data from the City The aim of the project is to design a map based interactive tool that will visualize mobility and activity of people in the city, to support decision making processes through urban daily life.
Design of a Robot Prototyping Tool We explore the design of classroom assistant robots and work with primary school kids to learn from them about social interaction with robots. We developed a toolkit for designing robots which needs further improvement. 
Interface Design for Spatial Augmented Reality for Indoor Use  In this project we are building applications and interfaces for spatial augmented reality for use in daily life at home. 
Tangible User Interface Design for Preschoolers’ Spatial Learning The project is about building the prototype of a tablet application that makes use of tangible blocks such as tangram or froebel gifts. A storytelling based tablet application to help preschool children’s spatial learning will be developed. 
Syrian Refugees in Turkey This project aims to bring together different theoretical and empirical debates on forced migration, specifically related to Syrian refugees in Turkey. Throughout the project, we will expand empirical knowledge on forced migration, on related questions on displacement, integration, discrimination, narratives of identity, and rhetoric of multiculturalism. This will be done through comparison of selected cases, including by studying similarities and differences of specific policies adopted by various states. Taking into account of Turkey’s political process, the structure of society and living conditions of Syrians outside the camps, the project also aims to provide strategies in developing social, cultural and labour integration policies by focusing on humanitarian needs of Syrian refugees such as housing, health and education and so on.
Forced Migration Resource Center Forced Migration Resource Center (FMRC) is an online platform that brings together a diverse collection of reliable and accurate resources concerning the situation of Syrian refugees in Turkey and the region. The center provides online and free access to anyone – that is, individual researchers, universities, civil society organizations, international organizations, policy makers and displaced persons themselves seeking information into issues related to forced migration and asylum. Primary aim of FMRC is to increase the research capacity of all actors working in the field and enhance inter-institutional communication among civil society, academia and international organizations addressing the issue of forced migration. It also aims to prevent the information pollution and regulate the overload of information in the field.
The Role of Civil Society in Integration and Governance of Migration This project aims to map the role of civil society organizations and intergovernmental organizations in the context of integration and governance of migration. It will include the mapping of such organizations actively working in the field, assess their work in relation with the policies of the host country, as well as their intermediary role in providing services to migrants, which may result in facilitating/hampering their integration processes. Migration Research Center summer school in July will also delve on this topic and comprise of academic training and discussions.

Dangerous Companions: Cooperation between States and Nonstate Armed Groups  Dangerous Companions is a project trying to realize two objectives with respect to the interactions between states and Non-State Armed Groups (NAGs, hereon). Building on a novel conceptualization of state and armed rebel groups relations, it engages in (1) collecting data on these relations and (2) building a continuously maintained data portal, which is accessible by public and includes information on individual profiles of NAGs and states they are allied with. Dangerous Companions Project (DCP) builds on the understanding that NAGs are not mere agents of states, simply serving to realize the objectives of states they subject themselves to. The varieties of state-NAGs relations are further developed in the Principle Investigator’s book titled States in Disguise (San-Akca 2016). Dangerous Companions: Group Leaders Dataset  Group Leaders Dataset Project intends to collect and code data on the leaders of Nonstate Armed Groups that have been active in the period between 1945 and 2015. A NAG refers to an organized group of people who resort to violent means to achieve their objectives over a specific period. They range from guerilla movements to revolutionary movements, to rebels, to anarchist movements, to ethnic and religious secessionists, and to terrorists that target a country to achieve certain political objectives through violent means. A leader or leadership is described as a person or a group of individuals, who are primary points of contact within a group with respect to control over the command structure and communication channels within a group. They are in charge of either or all of the following tasks: a) determining the group’s political objectives; b) planning the armed operations; c) specifying the organizational structure; d) raising resources and recruiting people for the group. Key variables to collect data on: Leadership Structure (whether a single person or a group of people take up different roles for the conduct of a group’s operations), Advisory Board (Is there a body of councils advising the leader about certain political and armed actions of a group?), leader’s name, responsibility, ethnic and religious identity etc. 
The Use of Head Mounted Projection Displays to Interact Everyday Objects • In this project we will design a head mounted projection display which is a wearable augmented reality device to be used for interacting with everyday object. Project will be focusing on virtual information giving for everyday tasks, including learning information about an artefact in exhibition settings etc.. The students who participate in this project may undertake the user study codings, harware and software development process, content and interface design for exhibitions
Developing an Arm-Worn Device for Role Playing Games  • In this project we will design a wearable device for enhancing the experience of the role Playing Games. The students who participate in this project may undertake the user study codings, game content design or hardware design of the device. 
Augmented Mug as a Tangible Interface for Social Interaction This project aims to create a tangible interface for social interactions by using an everyday object: a coffee mug. Equipped with various sensors it offers different interaction methods and open up possibilites for new forms of conversation. We try to understand how an augmented everyday artifact can enhance face-to-face conversation settings. We explore the human-object-human relationship in social settings through prototypes we design based on empirical research. The project is at the intersection of design, psychology and engineering, and the students are expected to produce prototypes with computational materials and help researchers to conduct user studies.
Mapping Cancer Mutations to Protein Interactions In this project, students will help developing methods/programs to map known cancer related missense mutations in protein coding regions to protein interactions.
Dockerize PRISM This project involves building docker images for some bioinformatics applications that our lab has been developing, namely prism and hotspot. These applications use many components and libraries. A dockerized version of them that are deoployable on clouds such as AWS will be developed.
Social Intervention and Policy Research  Three projects that involve social interventions and policy will be conducted during the summer research program in my lab: 1) Evaluation of educational interventions, 2) Social-psychological interventions in work-related settings to reduce gender gap, 3) Policy research on parenting and fatherhood. The summer research program will involve helping with (a) literature reviews on relevant assigned topics (b) research / editing / formatting / translating publications and reports, (c) basic data analysis, (d) data collection, (e) data entry and coding. 
Market Orientation and Marketing Program Standardization This study explores the relationship of market orientation (MO) and marketing program standardization (MPS) to the performance of subsidiaries of multinational corporations. Market orientation involves the collection, dissemination of market intelligence and developing a response integrating that intelligence (Kohli and Jaworski 1993, Narver and Slater 1995). Marketing Program Standardization involves the use of similar marketing mixes (product, price, promotion, distribution) across markets (Özsomer and Simonin 2004). In this Project, the relation of MO and MPS to profitability and revenues (sales growth and market share) is investigated. Primary data is already collected from top managers in subsidiaries of multinationals operating in Turkey and Japan. The project will involve the collection of secondary published data from multiple sources to complement the primary data and potentially some phone interviews or e-mail exchanges with managers. Some secondary sources include but are not limited to: annual reports, press releases, industry reports, international directories and databases.

Image processing based gaze tracking system A special eye glass will be built that measures the position and depth of where the user is looking at. Two webcams will be mounted on an eyeglass and the captured images will be processed by a software that finds the eye pupil positions for both eyes. Gaze direction will be calculated based on the rotation angles of the two eyes. A game will be developed using this system.

INVESTIGATION OF CHARACTERISTICS OF TITANIUM AND ITD ALLOYS  Titanium and its alloys are used in the aerospace industry, chemical applications, architectural areas, biomedical applications. the most unfavorable feature of titanium is the poor tribological properties such as wear resistance; hence, the usage of titanium alloys is limited with wear related applications. Since boriding and nitriding are a surface treatment method  improving the performance of these alloys. present project will be focused on boriding and nitriding of titanium and its alloys conduced with the aim of improving the surface hardness.  All works will be reported and presented by the student.
Improved Air-Bag igniters via Nano-Bor enhanced Pirotechnics Candidate is expected to prepare pyrotechnic igniter palettes from homogeneously mixed powders containing nano Boron.  Thermal conditions are characterized via calorimetric analysis.  This study is closely related with the Air-Bag, aero technology and defense related industries.  All works will be reported and presented by the student.
 
Production of high-tech boron compounds by solid-state synthesis methods In this project, powders of high-tech boron compounds will be produced by solid-state synthesis methods using chlorides or oxide systems. Powders blends will be prepared by blending or mechanical milling followed by cold pressing. After powder preparation, they will subjected to an annealing process in a furnace under Ar atmosphere. The phase formations and production yield of various boron compounds will be evaluated by X-Ray diffraction technique and chemical analyses. 
Investigation of the combustion behavior of elemental boron 95% and 95%_M  addition of MgO, Al2Oand TiO2 (5%, 10% and 20%-wt) In this project, one commercial (B-95%) and one non-commercial size modified B powder (B-95_M) will be doped by MgO and Al2O3 in 5%, 10% and 20%-wt steps, each. The mixed powders will be investigated with respect to their combustion energy (J/g) by measurement of heat of combustion in a calorimetric bomb. These experiments are important since pure elemental boron can be burned in air up to 69%-wt, only. The reason is the formation of a viscous oxide layer (B2O3) which blocks the oxygen diffusion to the surface of the unreacted boron particles. With the addition of MgO and Al2O3, a reaction between the boron oxide melt and the metal oxides occurs yielding ternary Mg- and Al-borates. The latter are solid powders allowing the oxygen penetration necessary for a complete combustion. The phase formations and combustion yield will be evaluated by X-Ray diffraction technique and chemical analyses. 
Content Analysis of Election Manifestos  This project is based on my collection of election manifestos of major political parties in Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. This unique collection will be transferred into an electronic form wherein a content analysis can be conducted. We will work primarily on the hard copies of these manifestos, scan and transfer them into a content analysis software. Then already existing hard-copy codes will be transferred into this software. We will work on a website where these documents will be made available to researchers.
Software Defined Networks Software Defined Networking (SDN) is based on the concepts of control plane and data (forwarding) plane separation in network devices, logically centralized control and it enables programmable network devices. SDN has been mainly attractive in data centers, and it promises several advantages such as flexibility without sacrificing forwarding performance, high efficiency through optimized routing, ease of implementation and administration, and cost reduction. This project involves study of SDN and energy efficient routing approaches in SDN. Design and Development of Applets for Computer Networking Concepts This project involves study of computer networking, distributed system concepts,
and design and development of web applets for introducing a selected set of
computer networking and distributed systems concepts. Each applet is expected
to involve animations, and stepwise development to describe the principles of the
selected concept.
Influence of socioeconomic and immigration status on the cognitive origins of cultural learning In this study, a joint project of Turkey-Germany, we follow the cognitive development of infants from their 8-months to 18-months. We gather several observational and eye-tracking data from infants and self-report data from parents. In this summer, we will work on the data processing of the collected data.
L2TOR: Second Language Tutoring using Social Robots The international and multidisciplinary L2TOR project aims to design a child-friendly tutor robot that can be used to support teaching preschool children a second language. At Koç University, we develop game-based English lesson plans for Turkish preschoolers to be used with the robot and a tablet. We test the lesson plans and children’s attitudes towards robots. Layered Materials for optical and catalytic applications In this project, students will synthesize layered oxide materials such as perovskite type titanates and niobates. They will also do spectroscopic characterization of layered materials to determine their emission properties. Since perovskite type layered oxide are semiconductive materials they can be photocatalytically active to reduce CO2 or water. These type of photocatalytic test will also performed.


Econometric evaluation of the Unemployment Insurance program in Turkey  Turkey has had an unemployment insurance (UI) program since 2004.  The UI Fund has been accumulating a huge surplus because only a fraction of those who contribute to the system benefit from it.  We will examine data from ─░┼×KUR (Employment Agency in Turkey) and study the patterns of use.  Main questions of interest include how users of the  insurance system differ from non-users, and whether the duration of support shows any variation other than that based on entitlement.  Participation in this project requires knowledge of econometics and STATA.    
Neural basis and processing dynamics of micro-adaptive and macro-adaptive perceptual decisions and their optimisation This project investigates the neural mechanisms that underlay adaptive decision threshold modulation at different time scales using brain stimulation techniques (i.e., rTMS and tdcs) and use of computational models. Certification for TMS use and programming background (Matlab or Python) are required. 
Endogenous error-monitoring This project investigates error monitoring ability of humans and mice for magnitude estimations in different domains. 
Decision-making and timing deficits in CNS disorders This project investigates how decision-making and time perception changes in conditions such as ADHD, DMDD, OCD, and Parkinson's. 
Gamification of cognitive assessment tools This project involves data collection on mobile devices for our gamified tasks and joining in game design. 
Building library of scientific illustrations (methodological, theoretical) This project involves identifying the illustration needs of the psychology and neuroscience fields and contributing to the formation of illustrations targeting these gaps.
